Hey young chefs, welcome to Danielle's corner. I have been cooking since I was about 8 and have always had a passion but lost my way for a few years, I am right back where I started though and love the business of culinary, restaurants and hotels. I will be attending the Culinary Institute of America in the fall and am the full time sous chef to Chef Cindy. This is a place where you can ask me questions and email me with any comments. I look forward to hearing from you. *To email me go to "contact us" and in "subject" write: Danielle's Corner*
There are some really important things to remember when cooking, always stay creative. Never think that trying something new is a bad idea. There are two things that can happen, it be amazing, which would be great, or its horrible, which isn't so bad because you learned something!
New flavor ideas: Just came home from the New York Chocolate Show, which was amazing by the way. While we were there, we tried brownies and cookies both with sea salt. The salty flavors bring out the sweetness of a dessert and make it more decedent. How about adding some salt to your next dessert?
Knife skills: Do not be afraid to pick up a knife, with adult supervision of course! Hold the handle of the knife with your dominant hand. Place palm of the other hand over the top of the knife and rock back and forth. It will take practice but soon you'll be mincing like a pro.
| Healthy Eating: When we cook, we have a huge appreciation for what we are putting in our bodies. Take the time to evaluate what you are feeding yourself. Make healthy choices through out the day. Whole wheat bread has ,more texture as well as the fact that it is not bleached and processed and therefore a lot healthier. Eat a lot of protein. Eggs are a great breakfast, and give the body the energy it needs to power through a long school day. Paired with multi grain bread and some fruit, it the perfect way to start a day. Stay away from juice at school. It is loaded with sugar and you will crash as the long, busy school day goes on. Drink a lot of water but remember use a reusable water bottle.
